Shortest path to your goal

Shortest path to your goal

"The shortest path to your goal contains the most obstacles. Instead of trying to avoid them, look for them, and conquer them. It will change your life." Machele Galloway

Take selling, for example.

 Let's say you're a new salesperson.

Your goal is to sell $15k

You're likely to do the things that come most effortless for you first.

And often.

Because it makes sense, right?

And if you hate cold-calling, you're going to find 4,235 reasons to put it off until tomorrow.

And if you're clever, you might procrastinate in productive ways.

Such as:

  • creating spreadsheets

  • organizing your email

  • studying how to master cold calling

  • reading a book about how to sell

You'll work very hard to avoid making the cringey cold call because you think you cannot handle rejection.

"What if they say no!?"

"What if they ask me a question I don't know the answer to?"

You spend a ton of time trying to get prepared so you can minimize the possibility of rejection.

Here's a fun analogy to show you what you're doing.

Say the 15k is at the top of a mountain.

The easiest way to get that 15k is to use a path that goes straight up - it has logs and fallen trees and stuff like that you'll have to navigate.

There's a second path.

It's clear, clean, and super easy, but it goes around the full circumference of the mountain.

It's easy, but it's about 520 miles and will take months to get to the top, where the straight path might take a week.

Okay, I might have fallen too deep into analogy 😂, but you get the point.

Take the path with the obstacles.

Don't fear them; embrace them.

Some of your prospects will say no. That's okay, learn from each.

Some of your prospects will stump you. That's okay; it's an opportunity to learn and better prepare for the next call.

It's okay to get rejected.

It just proves that you're working hard.

A salesperson that doesn't hear "No" multiple times each week isn't trying hard enough.

Don't fear it; make a game out of it.

Set a goal of getting rejected or hearing No five times each week.

Watch what happens to your sales.

And this goes with any goal.

The shortest path contains the most obstacles/challenges.

Where in life are you taking the easy path and circling the mountain?

What is ONE small obstacle you could tackle today that would help you get to the top of the mountain?
