How to ask better questions...

When was the last time you thought about the type of questions you ask yourself?

The questions you pose will send you on a scavenger hunt that will either propel you forward or drop sugar in your gas tank.

Let me explain…

Here's a sampling of common questions I hear during coaching sessions with my clients.

Why can't I figure this out?

Why do I always give up?

Why don't I have more discipline?

Why am I always so damn lazy?

Why can't I be more confident like others?

Why do I always procrastinate?

Why do I always (or never) _______________, ______________, ______________?

These seem like helpful questions on the surface because we think if we can figure out the WHY, we can finally find the solution.

Buuuutttt

Questions like the above only result in you creating a list of everything wrong with you (self-perceived flaws, of course.)

Have you ever felt motivated to do anything after reviewing and thinking about all the ways you're f---- up? 😂

Uh, nope!

Do you REALLY want to find solutions? If so, try this:

Replace your "Why" with "How" and revise your questions.

Such as:

  • Why can't I figure this out? ➡ How can I make it easier for me to figure this out?

  • Why do I always give up? ➡ How can I make it easier for me to keep going?

  • Why don't I have more discipline? ➡ How can I develop more discipline? How can I make it easier for me to have discipline?

  • Why am I always so damn lazy? ➡ How could I make it easier for me to get more involved in my life?

  • Why can't I be as confident as others? ➡ How could I develop more self confidence?

  • Why do I always procrastinate? ➡ How could I make it easier on myself to tackle my tasks on time?

These questions will lead you to finding a solution or at least your next best step.

What question(s) have the most airtime in your head right now?

Write them down.

Revise them.

Answer them (well, at least one of them).
