Decision Fatigue...

I coached my time management group last week around decision fatigue.

It’s the reason I teach to decide how you’re going to spend your time in advance.

When you’re thinking clearly with the helpful part of your brain.

Deciding in the heat of the moment using a to-do list is the hardest way to get anything accomplished.

It’s like eating pizza while you’re on the treadmill.

{It definitely feels like it’s easier, but is it?}

And it’s because you activate a different part of your brain when you make decisions on the fly.

The part of your brain that LOOOVVEESSS to think things like:

📣 “Eh, fuck it, just check email, things are too crazy.”

📣 “Don’t work on the presentation, you need to research how to create powerful presentations first!”

📣 “Work on those reports that aren’t due for six months instead of prospecting.”

📣 “Get on Facebook!”

📣 “Ugh, you have no discipline, you don’t even know what you’re doing, what’s the point?”

That part of your brain is hard-wired to take the path of least resistance.

When you make decisions on what to do as you go, you also run into decision fatigue.

Your brain is desperately trying to talk you out of doing the thing you know you should + your battery drains even faster because of decision fatigue.

It’s like trying to drive down the highway in reverse.

You end up squirrelling all over the place and you get nowhere fast.

One of the women on that coaching call last week took that concept and used it to help her navigate a “shit’s hitting the fan” kind of day.

Life handed her a day filled with work emergencies.

She took what she learned and redirected her default reaction to:

“I’m definitely not going to be able to map out my day, but how can I approach this so that I don’t experience decision fatigue?”

She took a day that normally would have made her feel completely defeated and powerless and instead:

  • Got up and worked out.

  • Honored the self-care that she did have on the calendar.

  • Prioritized the tasks that were non-negotiables and DID them.

  • Handled all of the unexpected emergencies to the best of her ability.

  • Honored her personal boundary and left the office relatively on time.

SHE 👏 WORKED 👏 OUT 👏 Y’ALL 👏

That’s some ninja shit because that’s the easiest one to give up on when things get “crazy”.

She chose to find a way to make it work even amidst straight chaos.

And I couldn't feel more excited and proud! It's just so damn fun.

She’s crushing it and learning things that will change the trajectory of her life.

And you can too.
