My word of the year | 2020

My word of the year | 2020

This word of the year thing seems to be a thing now, so I'm in. I thought about how the last few months have gone and what I want to accomplish this year. It's a lot - I have some pretty big goals.

I was going to go with Growth or Authenticity, but I decided to take another approach. I have a hefty goal for my coaching business.

So I set a timer for 15 minutes and made a list of all the things I need to do to hit my goal.

Reviewing that list made me feel sooooo much discomfort.

I am going to have to do a lot of things that I've never done, and my ass is going to have to get super uncomfortable; it's just part of the game.

I spent yeeeaaarrrrssss trying to stay in my comfort zone.

And now, I have to abandon that comfort zone, and my mind flipped the f--- out over it. Discomfort = Danger is my default thought.

Not true. Well, unless we're talking about the discomfort, you would feel as the rope slid off of your ankle while you're bungee jumping. The discomfort caused by speaking to a big audience, doing a Facebook live, or writing a vulnerable email, is not dangerous.

That type of discomfort is harmless and required to grow. I can't have one without the other. If I can open up to discomfort, and even create it intentionally, it will completely change my life.

So rather than fear and resist the discomfort, I'm embracing that little sucker head on. So my word for 2020 is going to be discomfort.

I want to have ninja-like skills for doing things that make me feel uncomfortable.

So I turned it into a game because growth can be hard but hard doesn't have to be boring. I am making a list of 52 things I can do that will definitely make me feel discomfort for the sake of growth and "making friends with the enemy."

So far, I have:

  1. Apply for open mic night at the comedy club

  2. Register for a 5k

  3. Do my first Facebook live

  4. Launch my first in-person workshop

  5. Attend my first Toastmasters meeting

  6. Write a really vulnerable email

  7. Go out past 9PM (lol, seriously, I am living like a 90-year old these days)

I'll finish my list today (open to suggestions), and each week, I will ask Siri to pick a number between 1-52, and I will do the task assigned with the number she picks.

Just the idea of this makes me want to vomit, so I know I'm on the right track. I'm excited to see what life will look like after I conquer the list, and I will share what I learn and experience along the way.

Comment below with your word of the year…
