Business Owner | Solopreneurs: This is why you get super emotional and feel like giving up sometimes...
The hardest phase of going for something new in your business is the part right after you push past your security guard, aka your primitive brain, push past the edge of your comfort zone, etc. (reference scientific chart 1 below)
If you’ve attended my recent free trainings and/or are one of my private clients, you know this chart well.
I do a lot of business coaching and doing something new in your own business feel so hard.
It brings up alllll your shit!
You cannot hide from your insecurities, underlying limiting beliefs, fears, etc. when you’re an entrepreneur.
I mean, you can hide from them, but your business won’t do so well and you’ll exhaust yourself.
I’ve never worked with ANY entrepreneur that didn’t hit one of the “omg-I-was-out-of-my-mind-when-I-thought-I-could-do-this” landmines when going for something big and new.
Sure, there are different flavors, such as:
I’m not smart enough!
I knew I couldn’t do this!
I was such an idiot for wasting all my time and energy on this launch!
I can’t generate XX revenue as a solopreneur!
It’s not the right time.
It’s not the right product.
It’s not the right price.
I don’t know how to use social.
I hate coming across salesy.
This is just too f---- hard!
Everybody thinks I’m out of my league!
Nope, I didn’t do any of this the right way, I need to scrap everything and start over.
OMG, only two people signed up! I’m never going to hit my goal!
Holy shit, nobody even commented on my post!
Nobody thinks this is a good idea!
I’ve hiked this trail many times.
And I continue to do so.
And I’m always amazed by how real all the above can feel when you’re in it.
This is why most business owners, especially solopreneurs want to give up. It just feels too hard and they are convinced that it’s them, their skills (or lacktherof, etc.)
In the beginning of my business, I would hit my “holy-shit-what-have-I-done” landmine, start catastrophizing (see above) and then I would spend a ton of time and energy trying to problem solve for all the things.
I would try to problem solve problems that didn’t exist.
I can vividly remember a situation super early in my business where I sent an email out and crickets.
Nobody responded.
Checked a few hours later. 👀
Nothing.😰
Maybe my email isn’t working.👀
Emailed myself.
Shit. Nope, it works.🚨
Maybe there’s a problem with the email service I use.👀
Checked the stats.
Nope, shit. The email went out and people opened it.
OMG, they must have thought I sounded stupid!
Or that I didn’t know what the hell I was talking about.
Or they cringed and couldn’t even think of anything nice to say.
And I projected all my own insecurities to the people on my email list (sorry guys, it’s not you, it’s me. 😅)
So I started researching all kinds of things to help me solve those problems.
Googled “how to write emails that sound professional, how to feel more confident when writing content, how to write motivating copy”
And I feverishly tried to read and learn and study all the things!
BUT…
A week or so later, I received an email from someone on my list that said “hey! That email you wrote about blah blah really helped me! I felt like you were talking directly to me and instantly made me feel better, thanks so much!”
I squinted my eyes.
Felt confused AF. 😵
Like GENUINE confusion.😵😵😵
I had so thoroughly convinced myself that all of the above was true that I didn’t even consider the remote possibility that it could have been helpful. Lol
Like that shit didn’t cross my mind ONCE!
AND, I spent houuuurrrss trying to solve problems that didn’t exist.
Is there value in learning how to do something better? One hundy!
Is there value when that drive to learn comes from a desperation to solve a problem that might not exist? Zero hundy!
Every single person that goes after something big hits landmines.
I lovingly refer to it as the part where you lose your shit.
I do it too.
And I know how this stuff works, intimately.
I’ve coached well over 4,000 hours at this point.
I study human behavior for fun.
I know the mechanics of what is happening.
And I still hit the landmines.
And I still believe my own BS as if it’s headline news.
I still believe it’s true in my BONES.
BUT I no longer problem solve for it.
{Sometimes I’ll catch myself going there and I’ll course correct rather quickly}
Pull the car back onto the highway.
Self-parent.
Remind myself “Ohhhhh yeah, this is just the part where I lose my shit because I chose to leave the cave! This is supposed to happen!”
It isn’t easy though.
But it’s a hell of a lot easier than having a dream that you didn’t pursue.
Or having an idea that your soul is screaming to put into the world and being too afraid to try.
You’re going to feel the hard either way.
Hard created by giving up and staying in a life that doesn’t inspire you.
Or the hard that is created by getting out there and doing what most are afraid to do.
The latter comes with a payoff at the end.
The first doesn’t.
If you’re a solopreneur or business owner and you feel super defeated and are stressing out about how to move forward, here’s my advice:
Zoom way in on your focus.
You don’t have to find 2,000 people to buy your product right now.
You just need to find the next one. Or the first.
You don’t have to be an expert at social media to find your first customer.
You need to execute.
Just post something.
Learn from it.
Post it again.
Spend a little time researching tips and tricks and then get to work.
Of course, you don’t know HOW to do it, it’s new.
But you’re becoming the version of you that gets really good at learning how to do new things.
Focus on what you do know right now and what you could try based on that.
Try it.
Learn.
Adapt.
Try again.
Find your first and the second will be easier.
Because of who you become in the process.
And because of your willingness to learn new things WHILE taking action.
Focus on today.
This hour.
Right now.
Don’t believe your own bullshit, it’s just your little security guard trying to get you back into the dusty spider-filled cave.
And the cave isn’t easier.
It just comes with a different hard.
Which one will you make you feel prouder when you look back on your life as a 90 y/o?
Choose that.
And then go all the f--- in on it.
Learn as you go.
Who do you need to become to create that result?
How can you show up as her today?
How can you show up as her today even when you’re losing your shit?
That is where the magic happens!

Every single one of them goes through the same thing; their spinouts are just caused by different circumstances.
